A dominant Lewis Hamilton triumphed ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas today to give Mercedes their first one-two of the 2017 Formula 1 season at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal

Hamilton enjoyed a flawless race which he led from the lights in pole position all the way to the chequered flag, where he was a massive 20 seconds clear of the rest of the field.

It was his third victory of the year and 56th of his career. It was also his third win in a row in Canada, where he has claimed first place an impressive six times.

Bottas finished 19.783 seconds behind as the runner-up while Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo clinched the final podium position in third 35.297s back.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari recovered from a disappointing start and had an exciting battle for fourth place with the Force India pairing of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. The trio were engaged in a heated fight over several laps in the closing stages of the 70-lap Grand Prix, and it was Vettel in the end who managed to get the best out of it.

His Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was classified seventh overall, Nico Hulkenberg was eighth, hometown hero Lance Stroll finished ninth while Romain Grosjean of Haas rounded out the top 10.

Following the race, Hamilton commented:

“It’s been such an incredible weekend. I just couldn’t be happier with how it’s gone and I’m so grateful for this result.

We’ve scored a big load of solid points and it’s well deserved. It’s a long race here, especially when you’re out there on your own, but I knew the car would hold together and it did perfectly.”

Canada marked the seventh round of the 2017 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. Racing resumes in two weeks’ time with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on June 25.
